We have 96 bales of baleage and approximately 30t of silage in the pit. This is approximately 130 kg DM/cow to get us through winter and spring. Usually this would be enough but with saturated soils we will probably need to maintain a faster rotation length than normal through June. We are looking to spend some of our early supplementary feed budget on some hay for the next 3-4 weeks to help us build cover and start calving hopefully under drier conditions on an all-pasture diet.<br> Feed offered for the past week:<br> 217 dries – 7 kg DM pasture + 2.5 kg DM baleage<br> 69 priority feeding mob dry cows – 8 kg DM pasture + 2 kg PK<br> 74 heifers – 9-10 kg DM pasture<br> Feed offered for each mob is based on energy calculations using the DairyNZ facts and figures app.<br> Maintenance for our 485kg average liveweight mixed-aged cows 8 weeks pre-calving is 7.1 kg DM/cow/day. We were previously offering 12-14 kg DM to allow another 3 kg DM/cow/day for BCS gain of 0.5 per month.<br> Cows are still being fed above maintenance for weight gain. Our second-calvers, which require a BCS of 5.5 at calving, continue to receive an additional 3 kg DM/day for weight gain. <br> In the month ahead, maintenance requirement increases to 8.7 kg DM/cow/day. We will aim to increase feeding levels for all herds now that we have slowed our rotation and started to build cover again. Dry weather will be a big help.<br> The Italian ryegrasses Mohaka and Manta have successfully germinated, helped by warm soil conditions.
